Something truly surreal and astounding happened yesterday, to the point where if it weren’t for dear friends and their witnessing/documenting, I would maybe begin to question if it had in fact occurred.
As my time in Skagaströnd has begun to close, I wanted to make something big. Something epic. And something honorary from a place of enormous gratitude. So in true G fashion, I found an abandoned trash yard, and built a horse god…at the base of the local mountain, (called ‘Prophecy Mountain,”) to honor and pay tribute to the iconic and endearing icelandic horse, with which I have been enamored for decades.
I built the sculpture with found rusted metal parts, salvaged fishing nets, bones, wires, stones, trash, love, serious physical effort, time, and intention. Like most real spells, (and being alas, only human,) I perhaps didn’t understand the full impact of what I was doing. It might take me years to, all considering.
Yesterday marked the sculpture’s completion, where stomping to the site w new friends @a___leif___ , @dana_engfer , and @moritzotto, I hung the detailed horse skull piece. (Photo credit to these individuals!)
Ten minutes later they came. Down from the mountain. Into the trash yard. Up to the sculpture (and us!) and seemingly paid their own homage. An entire herd.
I don’t think I have ever been so validated in my entire making life. I am so eternally grateful.
